As I warm up to begin the journey, I asked these questions I now ask you.
Is city it a skyline? A city is about the built environment, welcoming and sheltering its people. So, is city about buildings? Or, are we attracted to our great cities because of its about activities?
How does location impact “city” for you? Many of the famous cities we visit are known for their geography: think Miami; Denver. Many are known for their history: think Rome; Jerusalem. Others for the food they offer: think New York City; New Orleans.
Does it matter how large a “place” is in order to be called a city. So, we will discuss scale. Does population define a city? Or, is it the area it covers?
I will have to make choices informed by these questions. And, I expect, as I struggle to pin down my answers, that struggle will open my mind to other possibilities of the questions I ask, and the designs I create.
